Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard: what these brackets mean and the factors that place you in each.
Each carrier prices term life using rate classes. While terminology shifts slightly, the framework is consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, then extra charges for elevated-risk situations. Tobacco users fit into a separate tier structure at higher costs.
What underwriters look at
Physical measurements (height, weight), blood pressure and cholesterol readings, immediate family medical background (heart disease or cancer before age 60), traffic and violation history, medication list, line of work and pastimes, and any tobacco or nicotine consumption. Premium classes require nearly perfect scores across nearly all factors; Preferred permits minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed conditions like controlled blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health portion of the quote tool requests straightforward self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotes reflect that tier; carriers finalize your class following underwriting. If you are uncertain, try quoting at two different levels to compare, then let the application determine your actual class. Picking a rosier class will not reduce your final premium; it only makes the quote less realistic.
Susman Insurance Agency can help you identify carriers whose guidelines are more favorable for your specific health profile, which frequently matters more than the base rate you see.
